Because of their Patient-Centered Medical Home emphasis, PCPEDS has 3 newborn hospitalists, a fellowship-trained sports medicine pediatrician, an asthma care program, 3 lactation support specialists, a complex care coordination team, with other physicians emphasizing their interests in acute care/PALS instruction, dermatology, and adolescent medicine. Telemed has become an essential tool of their practice.  PCPEDS has developed a mental health program over the past 10 years and has been creative to integrate this into their primary care.

Episode 27 The Hope Circuit and Positive Psychology

The Power of Positivity to Overcome Depression

Cultivate hope with strengths-based practices grounded in positive psychology.

If you suffer from depression, sub-clinical depression, or low mood, you may have days where you feel like you’ve lost hope—hope that you’ll ever feel better, that the world will be a better place, or that you’ll someday find the happiness that always seems to elude you. You aren’t alone. Many people struggle with feelings of sadness and hopelessness—especially in our difficult, modern world. The good news is that you can change.

Learned Hopefulness offers powerful exercises grounded in evidence-based positive psychology to help you identify your strengths; ditch the self-limiting beliefs that diminish your capacity for positivity; and increase feelings of motivation, resiliency, and wellness. You’ll also learn to untangle yourself from rumination over past negative events, while shifting your perspective to the present moment and anticipating your future through a more positive lens.

Childhood experiences can affect a person’s lifelong health. Thinking Developmentally presents a clinical framework for understanding the impact of toxic stress and both adverse and affiliative childhood experiences on development. It makes a compelling case that many diseases of adulthood are not adult-onset, but rather adult-manifest, based on genetic and epigenetic consequences from early childhood experiences. Garner and Saul examine the needs of children and the role of parents, caregivers, the community, and medical practitioners in ensuring that children have safe, stable, and nurturing relationships. They explore community empowerment and offer suggestions for applying developmental science to help bring about healthy children, nurturing families, and caring communitie

Trauma-informed care is emerging as a critical component of pediatric best practices. With this new practical guide, pediatricians and other child health professionals will learn to identify, evaluate, and treat children and families affected by trauma and adversity when they present at the office.

In addition to instruction for acute, hands-on care, the cohesive approach offered in this guide also lays out a framework and concrete steps to transform practices into ones that are trauma-sensitive and can provide the best, most impactful care to all patients.

Childhood Trauma and Resilience: A Practical Guide includes mnemonics, charts, tables, and numerous case studies to reinforce learning, as well as timely information on physician burnout and secondary traumatic stress.

More than 20 reproducible handouts on topics such as attachment, cultural connections, and promoting resilience, will help pediatricians engage with parents on these important related topics and focus on the family factors that can help prevent and mitigate the effects of trauma.
